Smitherman - Shameless

Cincinnati city councilman Chris Smitherman showed his absence of morality in trying to capitalize on his late wife's misfortune. In this Law and Public Safety meeting the officer making a presentation can barely make it through the presentation as Smitherman alternately gushes over the police and repeats that his wife has died and he cared for her for months while she suffered illness. He has accused council members of using racial slurs in their texts. He recorded his wife speaking and released the recording after her death (so much for rest in peace).
His cronies published personal txt messages that had nothing to do with the legal case for the sole purpose of fomenting disaccord on the city council.
His latest gambit is to do what he can to financially hurt his opponents by having them foot the bill for the outrageous costs charged by his cronies' law firm. He cares nothing about the taxpayers. He knows he is a weaker vote getter than PG Sittenfeld and Smitherman and his droogies are just doing everything they can to make up for his weaknesses in policy, character, and personality. Parallels to crooked Donald Trump are pretty obvious.

Smitherman being restrained from attacking a fellow audience member at a Cincinnati council meeting
Well, like the bard said, Caesar was ambitious.
Note: the editors here at BiC were not keen on brining some of this up due to the notion of respecting the dead but given the councilman's total lack of such respect, we decided to respond in kind.

Apple's New Direction
On 3/25/19 Apple held an address outlining their new media services. Gaming? I now nothing. Magazines - I don't know why one would like to read New Yorker or Wired articles on small to tiny screens. The credit card thing sounds OK but not all that radical. At least they have a titanium card......
The TV part is kind of intriguing.
BUT In the past, Apple has promoted the work done by the creatives who used their platform but in this latest keynote address it was all about Apple partnering with Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, HBO, CBS and other big boys.
There was no mention of how the little guy can use their distribution channels.
There was also no mention of horror.

How Important is Wage History ?
Of course it was couched in sexist terms, but, in my experience, employers didn't jump on the fact I was used to a lower wage - they just denied me employment.
The thing is, I had just been employed in a smaller town where the pay scale was less than in the big sexist Queen City. I had the skill & experience employers wanted, they were just biased against me because of my lower pay history.
SOLUTION - I started lying and then I got hired.

Commuters - Trying Something New With a Data Driven Approach
The thing is, the problem isn't really parking so much as getting people to work & back home. And the rash of new businesses does create a new issue.
Greg Landsman as about the only councilman to mention transit altho a guy from Chatfield college did, and Landsman and Tamaya Denard both brought up making data driven decisions. Denard brought up finding new solutions.
So, how about this - survey the new business owners and Chatfield college about where their employees & students come from & when they come & go and then work with Metro to see if any routing & scheduling changes could accommodate these folks?

Starfish Prime
56 years ago, the United States detonated a nuclear weapon high above the Pacific Ocean. Designated Starfish Prime, it was part of a dangerous series of high-altitude nuclear bomb tests at the height of the Cold War. Its immediate effects were felt for thousands of kilometers, but it would also have a far-reaching aftermath that still touches us today.
On July 9, 1962, the US launched a Thor missile from Johnston island, an atoll about 1500 kilometers (900 miles) southwest of Hawaii. The missile arced up to a height of over 1100 km (660 miles), then came back down. At the preprogrammed height of 400 km (240 miles), just seconds after 09:00 UTC, the 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead detonated.
And all hell broke loose.

Is it Time to Embrace Our Prostitutes ?

During the European colonisation of Africa, people sent erotic postcards home in an effort to entice new settlers.

BiC has long championed the legalisation, regulation, and taxation of 'the world's oldest profession'.
We could use them to market our cities, counties, and states as the European colonists did in Africa 100 years ago - except - we wouldn't be colonists. We would be helping our prostitutes and they would be helping the geater community.

Sky Burial at Wesleyan Cemetery ?

Turkey Vultures have resided here steadily.
While Cincinnati doesn't want to inter people in the cemetery nor invest in an auditorium / chapel, or outdoor cremation ovens, or a , people composting device, maybe performing sky burials at the rear of the cemetery would be a good source of revenue for the city with little investment.
What is a sky burial?
In the mountains of Tibet, burial & cremation aren't too handy due to shallow soil so they take their ded out, chop 'em up & throw the pieces to the buzzards, vultures, birds who eat them up.
They free the soul & provide nutrition for the birds.
With more carnivorous birds in the area it could offer people a new & exciting way to dispense with their remains.

The Invasion 8/21/2017
Monday afternoon, August 21, 2017 under cover of the darkness from the solar eclipse, transhuman Nazi cyborgs will fly out of their secret bases on the dark side of the moon in their alien modified M 266 Messerschmitt fighters and scream down from the sky firing their alien designed particle beam weapons on frightened unsuspecting Americans in their mad quest to start the 5th Reich to be ruled by their alien hybrid allies.
Trump will quickly acquiesce in exchange for the right to build golf courses on the moon.
The deserted malls will become prison camps for dissidents and will be administered by FEMA (who has been in league with the aliens since the agencies's inception).
People will be harvested to work as zombie workers on the alien's slave colonies.
The alien lizard men will rape the Earth women and systematically end the human species as we know it.
But could there be hope?
Could we flee to the poles, enter the underworld and ally with the strange & terrible beings who live in those depths?
Or will they act with the alien Nazi hybrid cyborgs and just flank us & destroy our once proud race?
Any way you look at it - things will change for the worse.

Eat Shit and Die, Photobucket
The image sharing website, Photobucket, used by zillions for 10 years & more has decided to charge $400 a year to do what they have been doing for free the whole time.
Further, their site has become a minefield of pop up ads.
You can get a whole website for under $100, so how they pulled the $400 price tag out of their asses is fucking insane.
Anyway this site will have a lot of broken image links - not gonna fix many, but some....

Simpson the Only Candidate to Mention Delivery in Regard to the Discussion of Food Deserts
The Cincinnati Business Courier interviewed the 3 mayoral candidates about Cincinnati food deserts. Cranley rambled on like he was drunk & NOBODY mentioned the grocery food delivery options. Meijer & Kroger have contracted with 3rd parties & Amazon has limited grocery products.
When pressed on this, Chris Wetterich said that Simpson actually did, but it had been edited out.
The bigger issue is wether these stores will accept EBT payments. Amazon has stated that requires gummint approval, so the 3rd party delivery services might have problems.
Anyway, Simpson seems to be the only one who has any idea what is going on on the issue.
Simpson for mayor !
When pressed on this, Chris Wetterich said that Simpson actually did, but it had been edited out.
There are some neighborhoods that are looking at grocery delivery as an option as well. I think that works for some people. The grocery store is not just a place where people get food. It’s a place where people gather and the option of being able to go in and pick your own groceries … is so important that I don’t know that grocery delivery is going to work completely.I doubt Simpson is old enough to remember grocery & milk delivery, but relationships did evolve with families & delivery people back in the day.

John Cranley's Misguided Priories
Unfortunately, history is not on Cranley's side.
Back in the early 70s Kansas City, MO engaged in The Preventive Patrol Experiment where they found increasing or decreasing the police presence in neighborhoods had no real effect in preventing crime.
Nevertheless, he has added more city employees & circumvented the City Manager to give the employees raises in the face of a looming budget shortfall.
Simpson, OTOH, wants to invest in the city in an effort to create jobs & opportunity thru infrastructure investment that will also help repopulate currently desolate places where crime can easily take root.
More responsible, educated citizenry with good paying job is the answer to crime prevention, not throwing away money on men in uniform driving around in tricked out gas guzzling Batmobiles.

Is Keli Prather Insane ?
Or crazy like a fox?
Political newcomer, Keli Prather, is either batshit crazy or is using the anti media strategy that DJ Trump successfully used to win the presidency. Not that he's not batshit crazy or anything...
Her campaign appears to be a social media based campaign where she has accused a Cincinnati Enquirer editor of assaulting her.

A common occurrence with Cincinnati Enquirer editors - who hasn't received a beat down from one or two?
Then, after her campaign was covered at Cincinnati.com, she fired off this post on their Politics FB group with the hashtag, "Fuck the racist ass Cincinnati Enquirer", because she didn't like the photo they used.

This chick is showing the cool, calm rationality we need in government for sure. Maybe she will strt Tweeting about fake news.
But, hey, it worked for the POTUS, so maybe people will buy in with the angry, media victimized woman thing.

Are Food Deserts an Issue?
In the latest Cincinnati mayoral debate the issue of food deserts came up.
But as more and more delivery options come online, do the old desert definitions still apply?
Meijer has announced they will be delivering most grocery items (no hooch, prescriptions, etc.) and Amazon already has a limited supply of groceries (and hooch) with Prime Now. Will Kroger be far behind? They already have pick up for online ordering.
Some convenience stores have ordering set up with 3rd parties somewhat similarly to 3rd party delivery for restaurants.
People complain that not all people have internet access but, as long as we can maintain our library system, that can be their contact line.
So, will the co ops like Clifton Market & Apple Street Market succeed?
Will the big guys rule supreme with low paid drivers?

The Denison Hotel
After a long battle between parking lot developers & preservationists, the Dennison Hotel, at 716 Main Street, Cincinnati Ohio has begun to be demolished.
The owners have stated they intend to build a new building on the site that will host an unnamed Fortune 500 company. This is what they said about another building around the corner they demolished that now sits as a surface parking lot. That was 30 years ago.
Levelling the Dennison Hotel will bring us a bit closer to making an entire city block of prime real estate a parking lot.

.
During the depression, building owners in CBDs frequently found themselves with vacant buildings because their tenants had all gone out of business. The building owners would demolish the buildings and, with the rise of automobile ownership, the owners utilized their vacant lots as surface parking lots. This generated enough money to cover their real estate taxes. Pretty much nobody alive today remembers that CBDs used to be solid buildings and that there were no big gaps of parking lots.
It's a poor investment & essentially blights the CBD.
Will the city have wait another 30 years for the owners of this block, legally represented by the chair of the Hamilton County Democratic party, to keep their word or just assume they are lying and the strategy is to somehow support automobile sales in an area chock full of public transit.
Valentine's Day, February 14, 2017.
What will be the status of this block 2/14/2047?

Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it ~ Edmund Burke
Seems like there is a politician out there wanting to pass - delete laws without understanding why we did & didn't make them already.
People want to license cats because we license dogs. But cats don't pack & rip your kids to pieces.
People want to license bicyclists because motorists require licensing. But bicyclists don't crash into other motorists, buildings and largee groups of people causing death, destruction and financial ruination.
Now this punk, Congressman Matt Gaetz (R) in Florida, wants to eliminate the EPA. he was born 12 years after President Richard Nixon (R) signed the agency into existence. He apparently doesn't know what went on before and why the agency was created.
A major job they had was to figure out what stored waste was toxic, what wasn't, where it was and if it was safely stored. People weren't worried about this stuff and a lot was in flood plains that couldn't be developed. OTOH, poorly stored toxic waste was getting into the waterways.
But Gaetz doesn't get this because he's just the sort of country lawyer Edmund Burke warned against after the French Revolution.
He's mainly grandstanding as I doubt this will get anywhere but with Dangerous Don & his denizens in power, who the fuck knows? I'm sure Putin would love a sickly American society & military.

Is Alex Jones an Operative of the Global Elites ?
As Alex Jones & his cabal at InfowWars continually hammer away against union & cooperation & promote division & balkanization, I wonder - Is the goal here to divide & conquer ?
After Napoleon swept through Europe, the kingdoms that didn't have a chance against his onslaught realized they had to organize within their culture. As technology advances, the world "shrinks". It is natural that humans homogenize and organize. Something's lost & something's gained.
But is Alex' plot at the instruction of the Global Elites? Is the strategy to divide society so the Bilderbergers can sweep in with their robots & drones to conquer the Earth?
Gotta ask yourself - how did Al get out of Bohemian Grove alive? How come he didn't become a human sacrifice?
There is no doubt his strategy of division, pill popping, paranoid survivalism and carrying on about supernatural malarkey is compelling - but what's the pupose? His constantly hammering away at the notion we should believe him and nobody else - well, that's just a core strategy of cults.
I cannot say. BiC doesn't have the kind of budget to crack the leviathan of InfoWars. But it's time to start asking these questions.

TV on the Honor System
Could there be another way to deliver TV content to the products (us)?
Instead of chopping up shows with commercials that people have been increasingly able to defeat and, online, can crash ones browser - how about giving the viewer a list of sponsors and maybe specific products - let the viewer purchase one or two - then, the sponsor would give the viewer a voucher he could use to download an uninterrupted show or even season of the shows.
I guess you'd have to figure out how much the sponsor usually receives from $ and unit sales. This method, however, would have the added effect of a confirmed sale and, issuing coupons, could confirm repeat sales.
The viewer would get a better experience and the sponsor would get better data.
I guess the only real drawback would be the viewer having to sit down and look thru the sponsors & their ads & buying shit online in advance.

The Post Mortem Sexbot
So what happens to your sex robot after you die? Does you spouse want it? Does your spouse even know about it?
It could be auctioned off with the rest of your estate. You could will it to your kid. In the event that your bot was modeled after your spouse, that could lead to some weird oedipal issues. Of course, if the bot can do more than sex, it might just become the kid;s robo-nanny.
Of course, you can take it with you, although as AI evolves, it might raise some ethical issues. you could turn the unit off or entomb it & let the batteries wear out. That might make visits to the cemetery interesting as one would hear ever fainter noises coming from crypts & graves.
Of course not all cemeteries would accept them. The inheritor of the sexbot come nannybot might want a nonfunctioning unit interred in a family plot. After all, it might have lasted multiple generations.
The used bot's AI also might make comparisons to it's previous owners that might put off the new owners. "OOH, that's not how your daddy did that"
The funeral director will be faced with the issue of the surviving sexbot attending the funeral & timing that with the transferring of the property.
Which leads to another issie - What if the owner wants to set his robot free? Ptobably not an issue with the current line of animatronics, but down the road? No doubt many sexbots will have skimpy maid outfits in their wardrobe but will they have marketable skills? Might grandpa's sexbot just wind up turning tricks at Third & Main untill Chinese gangsterbots kidnap the unit & part it out?
Just the idea of having sex with machines might be an issue for some folks now, but we need to look at the long term implications, too.

Redefining Protected Classes

Not sure what being Indian or being Methodist has to do with going out & buying a gun - or a toaster for that matter.
OTOH, if you are a weaponized cyborg type of person, that might be something different.

Politically Correct Cyber Monday
Well, as if Black Friday wasn't difficult enough, now we have to run a gauntlet/maze of political boycotts.
Pro Trump - anti Trump? They all hate Macy's & Amazon. Trump supporters want you to boycott Pepsi, Netflix & Starbucks.
Anti Trump? You need to boycott Zappos, Stein Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond & Burlington Coat Factory.
But who isn't on any of these hate lists? Dern tootin', slick, Blogging Isn't Cool!
You can camp out at Target, beat the shit out of your neighbors at WalMart, get murdered by C.H.U.D. downtown like all the other lemmings ~OR~ you can buy real cool stuff hand picked by the BiC staff from your employers' diseased, rat infested death trap.
Where else can you get a shower curtain emblazoned with the crest of Erzsebet Bathory? To Serve Man BBQ aprons? Seal of Mercury keepsake boxes? Simbi ornaments? Ault Park shopping bags? Music Hall & Union Terminal clocks? Northside Knowlton's corner mouse pads?
From 80s midwestern punk rock to obscure 70s San Francisco acid rock - from futuristic man eating aliens to 16th century serial killers - from John Dee to Marie LeVeau - BLOGGING ISN'T COOL HAS WHAT YOU NEED !!

Think Pinball for Roadway Design

Drop targets & spinning targets could provide driver information directly in the roadway freeing up sidewalk space & eliminating aerial clutter.
AND, as drivers spaz around like leaves on the wind, bereft of any tangible goal, the spinning rubber mat in the game, Fireball could be used in intersections, taking the pain of making decisions out of the driving experience.

Boscas - Behind Every Great Man
An ad for Springfield, Ohio's Bosca Leather discusses the family history & the Bosca boys going to war in WWII.
What it doesn't mention is the future wife of Orsino Bosca, Caro Bayley's service in the Women's Airforce Service.
She later became the International Women's Aerobatic Champion in 1951, in her Pitts Special biplane, Black Magic, and the same day she flew to 30,203 feet in a Piper Super Cruiser, setting a world altitude record for class II aircraft.

Future of the Parties
Given the thrashing the Republican Party took by Trump & the subsequent thrashing the Democrats took by Trump, folks are asking what the parties must do to move forward.
The Republican party is pretty much a spastic zombie horde right now but the Democratic party is more like some ancient crypt covered in dust.
Actually, the Democratic party seems like old European nobility where people slowly spend their time gradually being groomed and gradually rising up through the ranks.
Consider this, Bernie Sanders, while an Independent, was only tolerated because he had worked with the party so long. If you had put his brain into the body of a 29 year old woman from Kentucky - the party would have shut her out immediately.
Michele young argued that her opponent, Steve Chabot, had been in office too long. But the head of the local Democratic office has held that position for longer & has barely cracked the local congressional seats.
While Republicans continue to redefine their party & the concept of conservatism, the Democrats need to get out of their tombs & start looking for some brains.

Is Dangerous Don Trump the new voice of Slack ?
As we plod towards the imminent end times will this occur or will Donald Trump be the salesman we need to save us from the aliens?
He polls well with Subgenius Slackers who revere his dealmaking skills & follies, but will they be enough to elect him president?
Does he have to be president to save us?
Could JR Bob Dodds resurrect, as he has so many times before & thwart Trump & make the deals himself?
Only time will tell, and what is time?

Rehash of a Rehash
Will Hollywood notice? Our major political parties don't seem to get it.
But Nightly Business Report reports that sequels just ain't getting it. Especially bad sequels.
But Nightly Business Report reports that sequels just ain't getting it. Especially bad sequels.
There are a lot of sequels that do very, very well. It may just be a quality problem. If the movie doesn’t resonate, if it’s not a good movie, it may not be a — that people are biased against sequels, they may just be biased against bad movies. So, try this, Hollywood - try being original.

Happy Northwest Ordinance Day !
In 1787 the Congress of the Confederation of the United States passed the Northwest Ordinance that established the organization of the states north of the Ohio River & east of the Missouri making the midwest the White Castles of American states.
When people talk about the sameness of the midwest, it's a major contributor.
It called for the surveying of the territories & the establishment of counties & townships.

Tell Your Dog to STFU
People shoot off fireworks on the 4th of July as the founders intended and maybe a couple other days each year.
Nowadays, our fragile eggshell minds can't take it &, especially our mutts can't take the break in the serenity of their lives. Back in the founders day, dogs were real men.
My beef is that I am constantly badgered by my neighbors dog whenever I set foot out of my house. Incessant barking 24 hours a day is OK but fireworks a couple nights a year is some sort of sin?
Fuck off prissy dog owners - teach your mutt to man up.

Dear Mrs Clinton
In your recent speech in Cincinnati's Union Terminal, you cited Mayor John Cranley for making Cincinnati's power supply 100% green. That was really the work of the last mayor & particularly vice mayor Roxane Qualls.
Actually, John Cranley looked into dismantling that work.
He also sought to stop an electric passenger rail project in Cincinnati which would have cost us millions. Furthermore, he has worked to build pointless roads.
As far as that repurposed train station? It's still a train station and a lot of people would like to see more train service there.

Northside's 4th of July Festivities Need YOUR Help
The organizers of Northside's 4th of JUly festivities are running into higher than normal fees & such. A double whammy thanks to John Cranley & John Kasich.
So, this year they have set up a GofundMe account to raise some cash.
When posted on facebook, cincinnati councilman, Chris Seelbach posted that, instead of placing hurdles, the city should be helping residents put on events.
I'd agree.
But on the GofundMe site there is no contribution listed for Mr Seelbach. There is a contribution from Vice Mayor David Mann.....

The Future is Here
Jack Hite wrote an article for Smithsonian Magazine called The Future of Cars Is Already Here and discussed it on C-Span here.
Hite has his own self modified VW running on solar charged electric power. He points out most of the tech for flying electric autonomous cars is already here, it's just a matter of pulling it all together & sorting out the social aspect.

The Fall of Constantinople

The Ottoman forces included about 10,000 Janissaries (Christian slave soldiers) and were led by Sultan Mehmed II and, after conquering the city & Constantine XI, moved the Ottoman capitol to the town & renamed it Istanbul. It was considered the end of the Roman Empire after about 1,500 years. The Ottoman Empire crapped out about 450 years later at the end of WWI.

No Amber Waves in Porkopolis
A new Cincinnati ordinance lets the city issue fines for tall grass.$500 FINES This article @WC3PO highlights a healthy looking guy who didn't mow his disabled mom's yard complaining about the fine & specifically about it coming with now warning.
Now I have cut my grass twice this season but probably should have cut it 3 or 4 times, so it's fairly obvious...
Still, it would make sense to issue the ticket with a 7 day warning.
The question now is A. will it work? The high grass tends to attract litter & pests. and B. what will this do to the fees charged by lawnmowers? I doubt a lot of the kids offerring to cut your grass know about this law but if they did, they could really jack up their prices & improve their sales pitches.
And is the price too high? It's probably about what the city would charge to mow the lawn for you.

Safety & The Right to Drive Like an Idiot
OK, so I was on my bicycle waiting at a light @ Spring Grove Ave. & Crawford Ave in Cincinnati, OH. There was a car next to me. I signaled a left turn - I heard another car pull up behind him so I signaled again, the light changed - I started to pull out - a car heading S on Spring Grove slammed on his brakes ~ his back end fishtailing & the car behind him slammed into his rear.
I stopped & looked around. The car that had pulled up was a Cincinnati police car. I went my merry way & figured the CPD was already on the scene.
Then it dawned on me - Both cars had every intention of running the red light when one or both of them saw the cop sitting there.
An argument behind banning red light cameras was that it increased the number of rear end collisions (although they reduced T - bone collisions) but here, an unsuspecting police officer caused the rear end collision. Granted, if the cars hadn't stopped, I would not be typing this out now, but I am a loser who rides a bike - not a proud car loan paying American Motorist, so, OK.
But the rear ending problem is still with us & our stalwart legislators like Bill Seitz need to solve this once and for all.
Perhaps requiring police to only use unmarked vehicles (and not pursue suspects). Perhaps disbanding whole police departments since their main purpose is government money grabs and, as our governor has pointed out - they are idiots.
The idea that signs painted lines on the road & blinky lights hanging out in the air should trump the skills and free will of the wetware & it's cyborg 4 wheeled appendages is ridiculous.

The Future of the 20
The Tub?

It's been announced that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the obverse of the $20 bill.
NO
I kinda think we should stick to presidents & Jackson was also heavily invested in banking during his presidency. Also, the US $20 is one of the most used bills in the world. It's kind of a brand.
I think the choice of Tubman is also a fairly cynical way of throwing a bone to the "frails & the darkies" in one shot.
I certainly don't want to knock Tubman. Her actions & accomplishments put her in a pretty lofty status, but there's a lot of people in that category. She's certainly stamp worthy.
I think the only non presidents on US currency are Salmon Chase & Benjamin Franklin. Chase was on the first $1 & briefly on the $10,000 bill - but he was Secretary of the Treasury !
Franklin was instrumental in the founding of the country & fairly defining the bland fly overy midwest.
What did Tubman do? HT to Amy Walter for this.
But she wasn't elected on a national level. OK, I realize she couldn't be but, still...
The only American Indian on US bills was Hankupapa Lakota Chief Running Antelope who was on the $5 shortly back in 1899. How about Tecumseh?
Is there any reason we can't issue $3, $25, $30 notes in limited runs?
I don't agree with the Treasury on this and I really don't think they are bring honest with their decision.
UPDATE The NYT discusses who is slated to be on other bills in the future. Still no American Indians...

PG's Health ?
Tuesday morning Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld collapsed at city hall.
He laughed it off & said it happens all the time? Should this threaten his political career?
But does it really happen all the time?
Or is John Cranley gaslighting Sittenfeld to secure his own career?.
