Budget Crises?

After watching a couple episodes of The Learning Channel's Police Women of Cincinnati, an out of town acquaintance asked me, "Why do they always send a fire truck whenever there is any kind of injury?".
hmmm.....

The city manager played a shell game. He got rid of fire companies but kept the firehouses open by reducing the number of engines in any given firehouse. This means there aren't as many life squads (ambulances) to respond so engines show up with EMTs. If they need to transport a patient, then an ambulance is called.

The other reason is in the event the injury requires response from an engine (i.e. extraction or fire suppression).

Of course, by "saving" money the city manager is costing the taxpayers more money. Those engines cost a lot more than an ambulance and they have to remain running.

dunno if you saw any episodes of the show but the police could easily "triage" the scenes. Most of the injured people could have been transported in the back of a police car.

The police don’t want to be held liable for deciding who is transportable and who needs EMT attention.
