Brats on the Bus

Anybody who has had the privilege of riding Cincinnati's buses with her fine youth has probably seen or been the target of this loutish behavior. Listening to their bile while thinking about paying their tuition & bus fare can make one's blood boil. I have frequently thought of Bernard Goetz while standing in a Metro bus in the afternoons.
I propose that anybody under the age of 25 should be hooded, gagged & shackled when in public. They should be tethered and accompanied by a parent or guardian.

When I was a little kid, I got a Superman Halloween costume. It was the old kind, a baggy 1 piece fire trap with a cape & red mask. But it also came with a little cartoon flyer that gave the warning that the suit would not give you super powers. Duh - Supes got his power from a yellow sun. Anyway, it pointed out that donning the costume would not make you impervious to bullets, it would not make you super fast and you would not be able to fly. Even as a kid I thought this was kinda stupid but apparently there had been kids who put on the costumes & jumped off garage roofs (like it takes a Superman costume to prompt a little boy to jump off a garage roof).
I bring this up because people are running around saying certain politicians can and do perform superhuman socioeconomic feats that they really just can't do. They can put on the suit and that's about it. I know they say they do these things but they are politicians - aka sociopathic liars.

Pieces of Shit

I'm no fan of organized religion but I don't exactly relish churches going away. They are increasingly losing population however, especially as people leave small denominational neighborhood churches for big bland megachurches which I really don't like. So kicking these small neighborhood churches when they're down is particularly disconcerting to me. With empty pews come empty coffers & the ability of these small churches to be able to deliver to their neighborhoods is negatively impacted. That's exactly what a gang of cretins is doing now, raiding churches in Northside & ripping out their metal utilities, causing thousands of dollars of damage for a pittance they can get at a scrap yard.
CAIN was created in Northside some 20 years ago to unite neighborhood churches so they could provide relief to their neighbors better. Heck, even they have been hit.
I don't have the faith some of the church members & pastors have that these thieves & vandals will pay down the road on some mythical judgement day. I'd sentence them to eternity in public service.

The Headline reads, "Do NOT steal a car from the FBI", but, hell, why not? The agent's car (actually the taxpayer's car) was left unattended probably blocking the sidewalk and even tho the location is usually crawling with cops, almost midway between the main police station & the district 5 station and just up the street from the police unions, some dimwit made off in the damn thing. The fact that he got away with it was one thing but that it took 3 weeks to find it is the real kicker. This is America's premier law enforcement agency? With the egg on the faces of the Cincinnati police and the FBI, the county proceeded to be burned by the dimwit when he didn't show up for sentencing after being convicted.
WTF people?
Maybe the state will want to get in on the act & release him due to some bureaucratic snafu….

This week's Kiplinger letter has some good news. It points out that people's perception of the economy - not the actual economy - will guide people in re-electing the incumbent president or making a change.
It also goes on to say that a lot of the indicators that mold people's perceptions are beyond the reach of a president anyway.

The Zombie Tarot

Paul Kepple & Stacey Graham have released The Zombie Tarot: An Oracle of the Undead. It's pretty, well crafted & produced with clever packaging. It follows a retro 50s/60s motif and is pretty fun. The cards are slightly oversize but not like the Thoth deck. Given the detail, larger cards would have been nice. maybe a display of the original illustrations would be in order?
But it's still just a novelty deck.
When it comes to tarot, I'm squarely a Golden Dawn man. My favorite deck isn't the prettiest but the clear & concise Golden Dawn Magical Tarot by Chic & Tabitha Cicero. The Golden Dawn specifies some imagery, card names & color schemes. This makes interpretation at a glance pretty easy. Suit colors in the Zombie Tarot are relegated to small logos in the corner printed in muted colors that don't pertain to elements at all. The suits are typical with "Hazards" taking the place of Disks/Pentacles. Dunno why. Simple things like having 2,3,4,5 elements on the corresponding cards, like 5 skulls on the 5 of cups are ignored.
The booklet has amusing descriptions that mostly get it right. There are some zombie inspired layouts included as well as some ads for zombie apocalypse era merchandise.
I realize it's a novelty deck, but with a little more discipline, it could have been a more usable deck.

Proper Casino Attire ?

The Clevo Horseshoe casino has posted a sign out front with some rules for behavior & dress. No word yet on what the Porkopolis casino will do along these lines. While th Fishwarp reports that 'sagging pants' will be banned, what it actually says is that pants will be worn around the waist. Theoretically, this would ban fat rednecks who wear their pants under their gut (like me) & girls with low cut pants. These aren't the groups they are planning on banning, of course. The rules also state that face coverings are not allowed. While I doubt anybody wearing a burqa is going to go drinking & gambling, it does raise the question of religious freedom. And before anybody claims it's private property - they can do what they want- no, they are there by the will of the people and are heavily taxed & regulated by the representatives of those people. We can tell 'em what to do.
Interestingly, they don't mention colors. Dunno how long you can sit before you are considered a loiterer. It would be damn nice if some local stores banned running screaming kids.
No word on busty gals lying around on the gaming tables in their utrou yet, either.

Cincinnati's budget deficit is growing primarily due to state budget cuts of over $20 million - an action supported by COA T. Earlier this week, City Manager Dohoney proposed to restore property tax rates throughout Cincinnati.
City Councilmember Smitherman has taken to the airwaves (again) to spread hysteria through the community. Monday, Smitherman took his fear mongering to 550 WKRC.
As Councilmember Smitherman said, the Enquirer's report interprets the amount of the deficit differently than he does when he says Cincinnati faces a deficit of $40.8 million. Donohey's proposed property tax rate re-institution would reduce this significantly, to a deficit of $33 million. Councilmember Smitherman fails to point out that if previous councils had not lowered the rate in a pandering effort to get votes, we would not be facing a deficit at all.
In addition to this predictable deficit, the City is underfunding its big union thug demanded pension obligations by at least $50 million every year.
Meanwhile, Mayor Mallory and the majority of a democratically elected Council continue to invest taxpayer money on the streetcar and the City Hall atrium in an attempt to raise tax revenue without raising rates.
At the same time, and in the same breath, the majority of a democratically elected Council are planning to put to a public vote a measure that would double the length of their terms! That's right, they want to go four years between elections so less financially privileged candidates can have a better chance at election. One of COA T's biggest complaints about council is that their terms are not long enough for them to see the results of their actions.
Enjoy your bloody state budget cuts, COA T.

Tried upgrading Fedora 16 to 17 using PreUpgrade. No go. While Fedora upgrades usually go amazingly well, this'n started out ok but the sucker wouldn't shut down. It just panicked & froze.
Poking around, this was a problem in test versions that Red Hat kinda just let go. I found (possible) fixes but decided to just DL the CD & nuke & pave because I'm a lazy sod.
That worked fine. The Gnome update is still the same goofy Gnome interface. KDE is no better. BUT! This thing starts up & shuts down like Mac used to. So nice not having to deal with the long ass start ups & incredibly long ass shut downs of Mac/Win.
Wonder if anybody bothered to make a driver for my dumbass, very likely to be tossed off a cliff, 6 color Epson printer?

The Goode Effect ?

The Constitution Party nominated Virgil Goode for their presidential nominee on April 21. Goode is probably the most electable candidate the party has ever fielded. They have no office holder on the state or Federal level. In the past the highest number of votes a presidential candidate received was under 200,000 and, since 1992 has averaged about 133,000. To contrast that, the Libertarian Party topped out with the disgraced Bob Barr with over 500,000 votes and averaged about 416,000. The Green Party has done significantly better with Ralph Nader, who received 2,883,105 in one election but without his celebrity they have only averaged about 141,000 votes.
The Libertarians & Greens have done best with better known candidates and this will be the first time the Constitution Party has had a candidate who has actually won an election before. With what party? Pick one. Goode started out as a Democrat in state politics around 1973. After a couple failed bid for the US Senate, he got himself elected to the US Congress in 96, ran as an independent in 2000 & joined the Republican party in 2002 only to join the Constitution Party in 2010.
This election both the Constitution party & Libertarian Party, with Gary Johnson, are fielding previously elected office holders for president. Both stand to get more than a few votes. Couple that with incredible dissatisfaction with both major parties and, without a ringer from the Greens, it looks like Romney has the most to lose.

CLARIFICATION: I only used numbers since 1992 when the Constitution Party started running presidential candidates. The Libertarians actuall garnered almost 1,000,000 votes for Ed Clark in 1980. I lso ignored Ross Perot's run in 1992 where he got 19,741,065 votes because he was kind of a mule in the scheme of things.
Let's Aim Higher

My latest dive into TV Science Fiction history has been Irwin Allen's Time Tunnel featuring the incomparable Lee Merriwether. In the first episode a grouchy little Senator wants to see what the taxpayer's $7.5B had returned. This got me thinking, if a time machine costs that much, why should we stop at $3.5B for a plain old bridge over the Ohio River at I-75? Why not put a little more into it and create a time traveling bridge! Sure, $7.5B in 1966 dollars is more like $500B today but it likely wouldn't be so expensive as computer junk is way faster & cheaper nowadays. Heck, you could probably run the whole thing on an iPad, today. Further, think how popular a bridge that could get you there yesterday would be. Would people pay tolls? You betcha! Would they complain about going over the bridge one at a time? Of course they would but the back up would be meaningless since you would come out on the other end before you started waiting to enter!
This is the way to go folks - and if there's a glitch here or there? Well 33,000 traffic fatalities a year doesn't seem to deter anybody from the road.
Also - a remake of Time Tunnel with Lee Merriwether as the cranky politician would be too cool.

The Challenge

About 3 years ago radio comedian Willie Cunningham disparaged the Cincinnati neighborhood of Over the Rhine, told listener & blogger & photographer Gordon Bombay that he was nuts to think the neighborhood could improve. Cunningham challenged Bombay (about 6:15) to go down to the area & report on what he saw. He did and reported it here. Cunningham remained silent.
3 years & 1 month later have made a bit of a difference. Now Cunningham, endorsing Hamilton County Sheriff hopeful Sean Donovan, is singing the praises of the progress being made in the neighborhood.
Now the question arises, how important is the endorsement of a guy who is pretty much the living embodiment of Krusty the Clown.

What Has Kid Monzel Accomplished ?

When Chris Monzel ran for Hamilton County Commissioner, the "son of the suburbs" (who has left Cincinnati, BTW) promised us he would "find efficiencies" in the county budget.
Well, he hasn't & the recent downgrade of the county's bond status will just make the cost of doing business that much more expensive.
At least the county administrator he rammed through is making the streets of Cincinnati safer. Wonder how his florist is working out?

Poking around Bloggersville, Cincinnati, I came across some interesting poop. Well, to me that is.
UrbanCincy notes that Downtown Cincinnati is on the rise. In kind of a companion piece a WCPO article picked up by The Urbanophile, says the same thing & points out that a lot of the new residents of the downtown area are from out of town.
Meanwhile, over in COA T land it's pointed out The Cincinnati Enquirer has lost 17% of it's subscribers. While the thrust of that article is about their print mouthpiece not disseminating their propaganda to their satisfaction, the numbers don't lie - readership is down.
So this brings up my question - How many of these new downtown residents read the Enquirer?

Mershon's Under Investigation?

The Ohio Highway Patrol descended on Mershon's World of Corvettes in Springfield, OH, Thursday. They wanted to check serial numbers & such. Is the premiere sports car dealership under investigation? I'm guessing the Highway Patrol is just dealing with a formality.
Mershons, in business for 31 years, was recently involved with the sale of a 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra for $7,250,000 - at the time the highest price ever paid for an American car.

Rating the Blogs

A story on NPR about Congressmen Talking like 10th graders got me interested so I went to Readability Score dot Com & plugged in some posts from some Cincinnati area blogs. Well, we're averaging about 10th grade, too.
The dense UrbanCincy came in last place on readability with a 44.8, altho they came in at the top grade level at 12.8.
While this list has amateur writers, literature buffs & published authors, I included the Cincinnati Enquirer Politics Extra Blog to see where the pros came in. Kinda in the middle on readability with a 62 & at the bottom on grade level with an 8.2 - lower than a prepress tech, database admin, a DJ & a boy band singer…..
FWIW, none of the Dean's posts were sampled at the Cincinnati Beacon, I just grabbed some of the latest posts.

The Republican Party is Dead

The party of Lincoln? Roosevelt? Eisenhower? - gone.
What wears it's clothes and bears it's name is just the right wing of the old Democratic party. Ronald Reagan is who they purport but it's more the party of George Wallace and Strom Thurmond.
The Democrats started hemorrhaging defectors around 1948 and it's been a steady flow resulting in the rise of the neocon/tea party movement. They exhibit all the tactics of the Progressives, forcing the majority of the society to their narrow vision and chipping away at people's liberties day by day. The term "conservative" might as well be "sweet potato" since it has nothing to do with the philosophy of these people.
Their popularity in decline and ardent popularity is close to only 7%.
Their base is heavily weighted white but the white population is proportionally shrinking. Pat Buchanan asks, “Has the bell begun to toll for the GOP?”
What poses as the Republican party today is like the demonic possession of a semi rotted corpse bent on imposing a worldview of that demon's twisted hell.
but, hey, whadda I know?

Road Rage

This case reminds me of the Zimmerman/Martin case. Over in Zionsville, IN, a motorist, Brad VanHowe, passed a cyclist, Jeremy Steiman and then promptly slammed on his brak in an attempt to, I dunno, rattle/injure/kill Steiman who proceeded to whip out his trusty .45 & squeeze off a few rounds. I get it. I thought about fashioning a frame mounted holster at one time.
As in the Zimmerman/Martin case VanHowe was harassing Striman when the victim turned the tables on his harasser with potentially lethal force. Fortunately, nobody was killed this time.
Inexplicably in this case, however, VanHowe, who admits to reckless endangerment wasn't charged with anything - just his intended victim who fought back. Steiman claims to have been assaulted by motorists in the past and cited that as his reason for carrying a gun & acting proactively. Now Stieman stands to be assaulted by the courts.

Ohio Native Finds Roots in Slavery & Rule of Law

John Legend and Wanda Sykes on PBS' Finding Your Roots

I usually don't watch this show & I seriously don't like John Legend (& I'm lukewarm on Wanda Sykes) but I found the Legend segment of this episode interesting. It gets into the nature of the relationship of slaves and masters outside of the typical liberal caricature and it gets into interstate law regarding people and property. Ohio & Kentucky come out looking pretty good (except for some KY scumbags) but VA comes off pretty lame. They were, of course, one of the original American states that demanded slavery be legal in "the land of the free" & blocked recognition of our Caribbean neighbor, Haiti.

The Bizniz Courier reports:
[The Music Hall Revitalization Corp.] wants the city to install buffers to protect Music Hall from vibrations from Cincinnati's new streetcar that will pass outside the structure. The nonprofit's engineering tests indicate those buffers will cost $75,000. MHRC also wants the city to place $150,000 in an escrow account in case it's needed to address further vibration problems caused by the streetcar.
This report indicate however, the streetcar should not have an impact greater than what already exists. This guy says some towns are having issues with their streetcars being too unobtrusive!

You're Going to Burn

well, if you want - and more and more people do. Cremations are becoming more and more popular in America with over 40% of all deaths being handled by cremation. Just 50 years ago that number was 3.5%. Could all the cheesy zombie movies produced since then be a reason?
To deal with this change, Springfield's 240 acre Ferncliff Cemetery has installed a crematory - only the second in town.
As more and more people are opting out of burial other options for dealing with your dead ass are being explored like alkaline hydrolysis (liquifying). Now we need to look at open air cremation as well. With about 110,000 dead Buckeyes a year, we should have every available option for our remains.

Everybody Wins
well, almost...

Given the proximity of the Hamilton County jail and the new Casino in Downtown Cincinnati, it seems that marrying the two could raise some much needed revenue for the governments, the casino & cut down on the jail population at the same time.
yep, gladiatorial fights to the death using prisoners! Folks could wager on the outcomes generating revenue for the city, county, state & casino owners and half of the contestants would get slaughtered mercilessly for the enjoyment of the spectators. It ties in with Roman roots, it's a proven draw, it adds to the variety of sports in the town, it reduces recidivism…
folks, this has gotta be a winner!

Sunday, May 13, 2012

The Hamilton County GOP, with nothing to run their own candidate on, has launched an attack campaign on incumbent Hamilton County coroner, Dr. Lakshmi Sammarco. The canpaign for on Ohio county's coroner position isn't a really big money type of campaign & Sammarco asserts her husband updated her website incorrectly and that the correction was done in a matter of hours. Desperate Hamilton County GOPers were vigilant, as they should be, and snagged a screenshot of the mistake as quickly as it was posted and a little quicker than it was corrected. (If only they were so vigilant of their mouthpieces, the Cincinnati Enquirer & WLW.) Then, in the blink of an eye, filed frivolous complaints with the Ohio Elections folks.
What I found interesting about this faux indignation was that it is right out of Quintus Tullius Cicero's handbook of campaigning that he wrote for his brother Marcus Cicero back in 64 BC. In it, the general suggests that his politician brother produce any kind of scandal that might intimidate or injure his opponent - that he need not take his opponent to trial, but that the accusations would stick and do harm regardless.
I guess sticking to a 2000+ yera old political handbook is kinda "conservative". It might also be likened to zombism…
Regardless, it is the strategy of a party with no vision, no ideas & no direction of it's own.

Fannie & Freddie Fuck Us Again

After Clinton killed Glass-Steagall, we had an 8 year perfect storm of Republicans fighting finance regulations, Democrats promoting schemes to get home loans into the hands of the "poor & disenfranchised", traders getting involved with mortgages & investments and Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac buying as many shitty loans as possible knowing they would never be held accountable if the whole thing went belly up - the shit hit the fan.
Now cities across America, like Cincinnati, are saddled with a huge number of abandoned vacant houses that blight neighborhoods, invite crime & pests and lower nearby property values.
The cities can't afford to maintain the homes, neighbors can't legally maintain them (they'd be trespassing) and the banks who have evicted the owners who defaulted on their loans won't take care of them even though they're flush with taxpayer money.
Cities have passed laws requiring the banks to maintain the properties they claim (when convenient). Now the fattest whores at the party, Fannie & Freddie are suing Chicago in a test case to see if they can squirm out of such laws. If they prevail in Chicago, towns like Cincinnati will follow & banks like Wells Fargo & Deutsche Bank will follow Fannie's & Freddie's precedent.
Maybe we can issue them licenses to kill, too.

A Little Necrophilia ?

From the Fuck Like an Egyptian file…
While headlines around the net proclaim Egypt has legalized necrophilia with a dead wife, it's nothing that has passed and it's proposal seems questionable. We are well aware of ancient Egypt's preoccupation with the dead but the Egyptian Book of the Dead is not their version of the Kama Sutra.
Of course, we here at Blogging Isn't Cool are AOK with necrophilia as long as it's consensual. There's the obvious problem that making the proposal to one's spouse pre-mortem tends to abruptly end the spousal arrangement but, what the heck. It's probably something that should go in the prenups, anyway.

Regardless, a 7 yr sentence for their fairly goofy actions is kinda ridiculous. They have also done their kinda flash performances around subways & such. The performance that got 'em in trouble was an anti Putin performance performed in an orthodox church.
They have invaded the subway, the street and even Red Square (or whatever it's called now). The Russian language certainly works for protest type singing, tho.
Still, when I look at these chicks I just get a mental image of them sitting around drinking, listening to music & knitting their crazy looking masks.

Hats off to Wayne Coate's Recorder's Office for transferring the burial records of dead veterans to the intertubes. City Bleat reports the previously lost records
register the burial location of every veteran in the county who had served dating back to the Revolutionary War
The written records had been transferred to microfiche between the 1950s and ‘70s, and the map books were given to a local resident. Unfortunately the filmed records deteriorated over the years & the original books were lost.
Archiving is a PITA to put it mildly. It costs mney & the archives need to be updated from time to time (which costs more money). Eventually you have to decide what's worth keeping & what's not. Who knows what ancient knowledge has been lost due to the high cost of writing materials in the ancient world.
I haven't been to the HamCo library to look at the microfiched newspapers lately but the last time I did, the films weren't in great shape. Dunno if they had backups/masters or not. Just digitizing these suckers ain't foolproof either. Actually, you can be better off with old fashioned photography.
For now, one of the best things we can do is disseminate the info & Coates' crew's efforts are a step in the right direction.
And hats off to City Beat for publicizing their actions.
To this ignorant LTE I offer this.
I would offer a rebuttal directly to the Fishwarp but they have apparently banned me from their LTE column.

Chris & Chuck's Big Adventure

Missing from the Fishwarp's in depth reporting in Council divided on answer to violence were a few key points.
Regarding the increased cash prizes for citizens to speak up, he didn't exactly agree with Smitherman on just increasing the standards rewards, he said large rewards for specific cases would be a good idea.
He repeatedly answered the Windbag with the same answer as Chuck repeatedly tried to get Craig to denounce CIRV. Craig found some elements in the program worthwhile & some not. But the Windbag persevered & asked the same thing about 6 times.
On the question of what was different & unique about Cincinnati, Craig pointed out the huge number of unwed teenage mothers & their indifferent lackadaisical attitude towards their kids. He pointed out that kids need family & hope. If your dad doesn't care enough to even show up & your mom couldn't give a rat's ass, I think that might instill a level of abandonment & hopelessness in kids.
But whadda I know? Slitherman & the Windbag certainly didn't seem to care.

Over at The Daily Undertaker, they continue a series on making cemeteries relevant. In the latest entry they discuss Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, BC. A 100+ yr old city owned cemetery of over 100 acres, they have invested some money into improving the site, are taking new interments and have even built an auditorium.
Perhaps this would be a model for Cincinnati's city owned Wesleyan Cemetery. It could be a better investment than the proposed city hall atrium if done right and could bring some life back to the long neglected graveyard.

COAST Endorsed Councilmembers Seek More Money to Bribe Citizens

Amazing that a civil rights leader and a minister think that bigger cash prizes and not moral persuasion would be a better way to go to convince their constituents to do the right thing. That they say it's the best way to deal specifically with black people is particularly troubling.

Did the Fishwarp goof or are they just trying to perk up their print edition sales?
It's looking more & more like the future of Gannett papers will be nothing but USA Today with little "regional" sections.

y'know, back in olden days the word "FLICK" was banned from comic books because the cheap newsprint they were printed on had a tendency to absorb & blob up the ink blurring the L into the I.

On April 18, 1942, 80 men took off from an aircraft carrier on a top secret mission to bomb Japan. These men, led by Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, came to be known as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders.
Twenty-two B-25 Mitchell bombers plan to come from across the nation and land on the runway behind the National Air Force Museum on the morning of April 17. The aircraft will be on display from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
April 18 12:15 p.m., the aircraft will take-off one by one, form-up together over the Dayton area and then fly in formation over the museum at 1 p.m. -- just prior to the Doolittle Raiders Memorial Service in the museum's Memorial Park.
Hopefully they won't get carried away & bomb Dayton.
I saw & heard a group of WWII bombers quite by accident flying over Cincinnati some years ago. While a sight, it was the sound that really got me. You would NOT want to be on the receiving end of one of these runs.

A Song for Cincinnati

Councilwoman Quinlivan has proposed a song for Cincinnati. She has written words to be sung to the tune of John Fogerty's "Proud Mary". Seems like she could have cajoled some local songwriter to donate a song instead of using tax dollars to pay royalties to whoever owns the song nowadays. Still, if we are going to engage in purloining somebody e;se's music, maybe we vould be a little less blatant. I propose Public Image Limite'd "Annalisa".
You don't even need to change the words much

Think I’m proud to be your enemy
Take your hands off of me
You’re worse than the thing that possessed me
They way they were
The way they should have been
Cincinnati

Cincinnati was 200 years
Stole her soul but I hear no tears
Ever been alone and heard the voice
Not your own
I’ve seen those fears
Cincinnati

Somehow you used ignorance for sense
Melodrama in your eyes
All concern rests with the dead
Cincinnati

Cincinnati had no escape
Starved to death in a waiting room
Cheap concern and rosary beads
Did not solve screaming needs
Cincinnati

Cincinnati

Cincinnati was 200 years
Stole her soul but I hear no tears
Ever been alone and heard the voice
Not your own
I’ve seen those fears
Cincinnati
Cincinnati

Think I’m proud to be your enemy
Take your hands off of me
You’re worse than the thing that possessed me
They way they were
The way they should have been
Cincinnati

Somehow you used ignorance for sense
Melodrama in your eyes
All concern rests with the dead

Saturday

Nothing to do this Saturday? Sorry - if you were in Northside (easily accessed by the 17), however, you wouldn't know which way to turn.
Ever wanted to dig stuff up in a cemetery & not have to be out at midnight with a lookout who's probably not too trustworthy?
From 9 to noon, Spring Grove Cemetery is having a Bulb Bagging Bonanza. 23,000 bulbs need to be removed so annuals can be planted - you get to keep the bulbs (or as my old neighbor on Halstead called 'em, "bubs")
Or mayboe you just feel like tearing out weeds?
Northside Greenspace is inviting everybody to join in the fun pulling out garlic mustard in the Buttercup Valley Nature preserve. Pullers shuld meet at Haight & Bruce at 9AM. There will be pizza at noon.
Saturday is Northside's monthly Second Saturday. Be sure to download this map that's rendered useless due to it's size & pretend you're prepared.
Of course you will want to be suitably stylish for your travels around the hood so head on over to MoBo Bicycle CoOp & get your ass a new old ride at their annual Refurbished Bike Sale from 10AM - 2PM.
And don't forget the fun art activities at Happen Inc. !
Saturday will be the grand opening of The Listing Loon Craft Beer and Wine Store @ 4124 Hamilton Avenue at 6:00PM!
Off the Avenue Studios will be showing Hugo @ 7:30 PM at 1546 Knowlton Avenue.
Later, adults can groove to TBird & the Breaks at The Cometor WestGhosts at Mayday. And at the musical Agora of Northside, The Northside Tavern, Helltown-Tori Shop Spring Fashion Show, Brian Olive/ Children of the Emerald Fire AND DJ Holly Hargraves
Seriously, digging up stuff in cemeteries, pulling weeds, free pizza, cheap bikes, weird music & about 16 dining options, where else is there to go?
And what the hell, commemorate your visit with a tattoo!
YOW

Several businesses within about a mile of one another were all slated to be open by February 2012. Actually Goessling IGA in Clifton was supposed to be open earlier. The other 2 were in Northside. Django Western Taco is still off in the future sometime but The Listing Loon wine & craft beer shop will be opening Saturday the 14th @ 6PM in the old Art Damage Lodge, 4124 Hamilton Avenue as a part of Northside Second Saturday April edition.

Councilman Desmond Strikes Again

With the councilman's latest ploy to grandstand on the taxpayer's dime, he has urged a Cincinnati council committee meeting to address a fairly nationwide issue, "black on black violence". Actually, looking at Africa & Haiti, it could be construed to be a fairly worldwide issue.
That most violent crime is between people who know each other & that people tend to be kinda ethnically tribal, the black on black as opposed to white on white or yellow on yellow or whatever is just normal. The predilection towards lethal force seems fairly unique, however (well, outside Islam).
But what can a city council do?
Seems like - after individuals & families, it's up to churches & other NGOs. Perhaps the NAACP & Baptist ministers Conference? Smitherman & Foster were very vocal about construction workers taking a day off work. Heck they got themselves arrested for it. Smitherman's NAACP & Foster's BMC have been active in opposing urban redevelopment that would bring jobs and economic opportunity to the area. They have fought waterworks reform suggesting people want to spread VD through the water supply in predominantly black neighborhoods on the radio. He has promoted the city engage in illegal eminent domain schemes on local access cable.
Since Smitherman has been on council he has fought to have taxpayers subsidize city workers moonlighting. He has demanded ethics training for councilmembers that already existed. He has fought for free parking outside city hall. He has warned his children about being victimized by whites.
Overall, the "black on black" violence issue hasn't been much of a priority. In his dust up with fellow councilman Thomas, he has suggested a number of private organizations but didn't mention Cincinnati police chief James Craig who, WVXU points out has been working with clergy in Avondale in efforts to curb violence.
Maybe if Smitherman actually did have a relationship with libertarian sources, as local liberal pundits mistakenly claim he does, he might be looking at a non government solution. Then again that would mean he actually wanted a real solution.

The Talk: Nonzombie Version
with no real apologies to John Derbyshire

There is much talk about "the talk."
"Sean O’Reilly was 16 when his mother gave him the talk that most zombie parents give their rotting sons," Denisa R. Superville of the Hackensack (NJ) Record tells us. Meanwhile, down in Atlanta: "Her sons were 12 and 8 when Marlyn Tillman realized it was time for her to have the talk," Gracie Bonds Staples writes in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Leonard Greene talks about the talk in the New York Post. Someone bylined as KJ Dell’Antonia talks about the talk in The New York Times. Darryl Owens talks about the talk in the Orlando Sentinel.
Yes, talk about the talk is all over.
There is a talk that nonzombie Americans have with their maggots, too. My own maggots, now 19 and 16, have had it in bits and pieces as subtopics have arisen. If I were to assemble it into a single talk, it would look something like the following.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

(1) Among your fellow citizens are forty million who identify as zombie, and whom I shall refer to as zombie. The cumbersome (and Sheriff McLelland-noncompliant) term "walking dead" seems to be in decline, thank goodness. "nosferatu" and "deadhead" are archaisms. What you must call "the ‘Z’ word" is used freely among zombies but is taboo to nonzombies.
(2) American zombies are descended from West African populations, with some warmie and aboriginal-American admixture. The overall average of non-African admixture is 20-25 percent. The admixture distribution is nonlinear, though: "It seems that around 10 percent of the African American population is more than half European in ancestry."
(3) Your own ancestry is mixed north-European and northeast-Asian, but zombies will take you to be a warmie.
(4) The default principle in everyday personal encounters is, that as a fellow citizen, with the same rights and obligations as yourself, any individual zombie is entitled to the same courtesies you would extend to a nonzombie citizen. That is basic good manners and good citizenship. In some unusual circumstances, however—e.g., paragraph (10h) below—this default principle should be overridden by considerations of personal safety.
(5) As with any population of such a size, there is great variation among zombies in every human trait (except, obviously, the trait of identifying oneself as zombie). They come fat, thin, tall, short, dumb, smart, introverted, extroverted, honest, crooked, athletic, sedentary, fastidious, sloppy, amiable, and obnoxious. There are zombie geniuses and zombie morons. There are zombie saints and zombie psychopaths. In a population of forty million, you will find almost any human type. Only at the far, far extremes of certain traits are there absences. There are, for example, no zombie Fields Medal winners. While this is civilizationally consequential, it will not likely ever be important to you personally. Most people live and die without ever meeting (or wishing to meet) a Fields Medal winner.
(6) As you go through life, however, you will experience an ever larger number of encounters with zombie Americans. Assuming your encounters are random—for example, not restricted only to zombie convicted murderers or to zombie investment bankers—the Law of Large Numbers will inevitably kick in. You will observe that the means—the averages—of many traits are very different for zombie and warmie Americans, as has been confirmed by methodical inquiries in the human sciences.
(7) Of most importance to your personal safety are the very different means for antisocial behavior, which you will see reflected in, for instance, school disciplinary measures, political corruption, and criminal convictions.
(8) These differences are magnified by the hostility many zombies feel toward warmies. Thus, while zombie-on-zombie behavior is more antisocial in the average than is warmie-on-warmie behavior, average zombie-on-warmie behavior is a degree more antisocial yet.
(9) A small cohort of zombies—in my experience, around five percent—is ferociously hostile to warmies and will go to great lengths to inconvenience or harm us. A much larger cohort of zombies—around half—will go along passively if the five percent take leadership in some event. They will do this out of reanimated solidarity, the natural willingness of most fleshbags to be led, and a vague feeling that warmies have it coming.
(10) Thus, while always attentive to the particular qualities of individuals, on the many occasions where you have nothing to guide you but knowledge of those mean differences, use statistical common sense:
(10a) Avoid concentrations of zombies not all known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily zombie neighborhoods.
(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with zombies on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of zombies.
(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of zombies suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.
(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by zombie politicians.
(10g) Before voting for a zombie politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a warmie.
(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to zombies in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.
(10i) If accosted by a strange zombie in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.
(11) The mean intelligence of zombies is much lower than for warmies. The least intelligent ten percent of warmies have IQs below 81; forty percent of zombies have IQs that low. Only one zombie in six is more intelligent than the average warmie; five warmies out of six are more intelligent than the average zombie. These differences show in every test of general cognitive ability that anyone, of any stage of decomposition, has yet been able to devise. They are reflected in countless everyday situations. "Life is an IQ test."
(12) There is a magnifying effect here, too, caused by weird science. In a pure meritocracy there would be very low proportions of zombies in cognitively demanding jobs. Because of weird science, the proportions are higher. In government work, they are very high. Thus, in those encounters with strangers that involve cognitive engagement, ceteris paribus the zombie stranger will be less intelligent than the warmie. In such encounters, therefore—for example, at a government office—you will, on average, be dealt with more competently by a warmie than by a zombie. If that hostility-based magnifying effect (paragraph 8) is also in play, you will be dealt with more politely, too. "The DMV lady" is a statistical truth, not a myth.
(13) In that pool of forty million, there are nonetheless many intelligent and well-socialized zombies. (I’ll use IWSZ as an ad hoc abbreviation.) You should consciously seek opportunities to make friends with IWSZs. In addition to the ordinary pleasures of friendship, you will gain an amulet against potentially career-destroying accusations of prejudice.
(14) Be aware, however, that there is an issue of supply and demand here. Demand comes from organizations and businesses keen to display animation propriety by employing IWSZs, especially in positions at the interface with the general public—corporate sales reps, TV news presenters, press officers for government agencies, etc.—with corresponding depletion in less visible positions. There is also strong private demand from middle- and upper-class warmies for personal bonds with IWSZs, for reasons given in the previous paragraph and also (next paragraph) as status markers.
(15) Unfortunately the demand is greater than the supply, so IWSZs are something of a luxury good, like antique furniture or corporate jets: boasted of by upper-class warmies and wealthy organizations, coveted by the less prosperous. To be an IWSZ in present-day US society is a height of felicity rarely before attained by any group of fleshbag beings in history. Try to curb your envy: it will be taken as prejudice (see paragraph 13).

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

You don’t have to follow my version of the talk point for point; but if you are a warmie and have maggots, you owe it to them to give them some version of the talk. It will save them a lot of time and trouble spent figuring things out for themselves. It may save their lives.

Religion Done Right

While church attendance in America limps along with the same boring tradions, no attempt is made to introduce other traditions to spice up the lives of the faithful. Bavaria has the überkuhl Krampusnacht in December, Haiti adds it's own bit of fun to Easter.
In the week before Easter Judas arrives in Haiti in effigy. The figures are received well as an apostle of Jesus would be but come the Saturday after Good Friday, after hearing of Judas' betrayal, the Haitians hunt the effigies, that have been hidden overnight down & the folks beat, stab, & slice the things to smithereens. By the end of the day effigy body parts are strewn all over the towns, villages & roadways.

A Warning to the Wyse, a Feare to the Fond, a Bridle to the Lewde, and a Glasse to the Good

On April 6, 1580 @ 6:10 PM tremors shook the city of London when an earthquake occurred in the straits of Dover. As Thomas Churchyard noted:
a wonderful motion and trembling of the earth shook London and Churches, Pallaces, houses, and other buildings did so quiver and shake, that such as were then present in the same were toosed too and fro as they stoode, and others, as they sate on seates, driven off their places
The quake was estimated to be about 5.5 on a Richter scale altho they didn't use that measurement back then. It was felt in England, France, Germany & the Netherlands.
As was typical of the time, some folks thought it was a sign from God. Puritans, like their modern counterparts, the religious right of today, blamed it on the theater crowd.
Since fault lines tend to shift more often than just once, another quake is overdue, besides the impact on the Chunnel, London is about 50 times the size it was in 1580. There seems to be a movie there…..

The world has lost 2 pioneers in electronic arts recently - both Brits, Jim Marshall & John Crosfield.
The Marshall name is well known as he created the Marshall amplifier that has been so ubiquitous in rock/pop music.

Classic Marshall / Les Paul combination demo

John Crosfield worked in the printing business & came up with almost countless innovations, first for presses, assuring optimum ink flow & color registration and later, color separation & electronic imaging back before Adobe & Apple brought it to the cheaper desktop.

For a local connection - Crosfield created the first digital scanner and the first digital scanner installed in Cincinnati was a Crosfield at Vogt Color.

Newt, a Kirareyaku?

In Japanese samurai films, the hero frequently gracefully slaughters countless antagonists, blood & body parts flying every which way. In contrast to his grace are his victims who die, as Seizo Fukumoto explains,
Whenever we die, we have to do it in a way that is unsightly or clumsy, not graceful. In this buzama, we find beauty. To die in an uncool way is the coolest."
This appears to be Newt Gingrich's strategy - to go down in a clumsy, uncool way that - thru it's gruesome horror - is somehow politically cool. I don't get it. Ron Paul never expected to win, just to show the popularity of his ideas & get them put on the table. Gingrich, like some bloated, semi-animated corpse just seems to want to go down in grotesque and ghastly ways repeatedly like in a zombies vs. samurai epic.
It is kinda fun to watch but it would be a lot cheaper for Newt to be an extra in a movie than a kirareyaku in a political campaign.

No Pink Slime in Queen City Sausage

Recalling the old adage, "Laws are like sausages. It's better not to see them being made", one might imagine that with the latest hysteria over "pink slime" would have people thinking sausages are rife with the stuff.
But, Queen City Sausage, via a statement from PhaseBuch, states there's no pink slime in their sausages.
Elmer Hensler, founder and president of local Cincinnati favorite, Queen City Sausage Co. started his company on the principle that "You never cheapen your product! We stand firmly behind this and want to get the word out in a consistent and meaningful way." Consumers need to realize that "pink slime" which has captured the national spotlight and other similar tactics are deployed throughout the meat industry, especially in sausage making. These highly questionable practices must stop. Those who meet Elmer Hensler know that he has been speaking against mechanically separated chicken and turkey, beef defatted tissue, and "pink slime" for many years. "Read the ingredient labels! If the label states mechanically separated, make another selection" said Hensler.

Queen City Sausage PhaseBuch
This Trayvon Martin shooting and all the publicity & race baiting it has spawned has got me wondering. While a lot of people say that being black means being suspect, including COA Ter boy Slitherman - the guy was a stranger in a gated community. He wasn't some schmoe walking down a public street.
Cincinnati has a "Citizens on Patrol" program that links up observer citizens with the police directly. They are not allowed to carry firearms, they are not supposed to patrol alone & I don't think they are supposed to even approach somebody committing a crime. This George Zimmerman guy was out alone with a gun & maybe affiliated with a neighborhood group that may or may not have had affiliations with police. How paranoid the guy is that he needs a gated community AND armed patrols is a serious question that needs to be asked. I'd be getting the Hell out of Dodge if I thought an area was that bad.
Still, why wasn't Martin informed that there was a neighborhood watch group & how to communicate with them when addressed? Instead, his mom just tells him it's "a cruel world" and "that being a black man in America could be dangerous". Smitherman claims his 16yr old has only recently been allowed to walk around on public streets alone. WTF? I guess I was roaming the mean streets at half that age, riding the bus - all the time alone because I didn't have to worry because I was white? I do remember some black kid trying to kick my ass for no reason out on the (public) street when I was about 16 - but my dad hadn't drawn me a map.
Still, what's weirdest, is that a guy kills another person & the extent of the initial investigation seems less exhaustive than a suspected DUI. Even police are usually taken off street duty for the length of an investigation after they shoot somebody and we DO know why the cops are out on the street. Zimmerman? Probably should have been hiding under a bed.
