Animal Rights Crazies Thwarted in Tragedy Exploitation
PETA couldn't find a billboard vendor in the Dayton area to carry their planned billboard comparing eating meat to infanticide citing the death of a baby microwaved by her mom (who was later convicted of murder).
The race baiting Southern Christian Leadership Conference found it racist (no surprise). I don't think that's what the billboard vendors were opposed to.

Perpetual Danger

When Ted Strickland signed an executive order barring Ohioans from owning "exotic pets", he brought up the recent death of a a handler working with a bear. Apparently we are to believe this ban is in our best interest due to the dangers of "exotic pets".

"This rule will help protect Ohioans from deaths and serious injuries caused by attacks from dangerous wild animals held in private ownership." ~ T. Strickland

Don't believe it for a minute. This order stems from from an insidious agreement made earlier with HSUS which has never given a rat's ass about human safety. They would shove you under a bus if they thought it could liberate your cat so it could starve, get fleas & wind up getting eaten by a coyote. If it was about safety it seems there would be a few other priorities for the governor.
Since 1990 there have been 20 deaths by "exotic animals" in Ohio. In 2009 there were 519 murders in Ohio. In cases where people weren't gunning for specific people, 1,190 people died from traffic accidents. So, you are over a thousand times more likely to die due to your fellow man's inattentiveness than becoming Simba's dinner & over 500 times more likely to get shot while stiffing your pimp. 0.008 people in Ohio per 100,000 are killed by "exotic animals" every year.
This isn't about safety at all.
Wayne & his thugs want these animals to live free or die. They consider the ownership of pets (companion animals) to be a tortuous form of slavery. Make no mistake, that furball dozing on your lap, purring & digging it's claws into your leg is a victim of your horrific and immoral abuse.
If safety & proper care for these animals, many being "retired" from zoos & circuses, is an issue, we could have the Ohio zoos concoct a training program & set confinement standards that "exotic pet" owners would need to learn & follow in order to keep these critters. Regulation, the zoos could pick up some spare change, the state could pick up some license money, the animals would not be put to death & everybody wins.
Well, except for the animal rights loons.

Now the Fishwrap reports Mercy For Animals, MFA, has produced a video documenting, yup, worst case animal abuse. The Fishwrap makes the common mistake of labeling the group an animal welfare group instead of what it is, an animal rights group.
Mercy for Animals deserves some credit for bringing these abusive farmers to light but, since evidence was obtained illegally I don't know if it could be used in court. It can probably only be used in their propoganda that, today, is timely in HSUS ballot campaign. Coincidence?
In 2009 MFA trespassed onto a egg laying farm & documented real & perceived animal abuse. Due to the illegal nature of their actions the Ohio Department of Agriculture urged farmers to file charges against the organization. The state prosecutors, however, did not pursue charges.
If these guys worked with law enforcement & the ODA, they might effect some mainstream ethical change. That is not their goal.
One of MFAs complaints was the killing of male chicks. As roosters don't lay eggs & don't grow fast enough to be harvested for meat, large capacity farms have no use for them. City dwellers who might be willing to raise them for meat are stymied by municipal laws outlawing roosters. Animal rights folks are not inclined to change that bit of legislation, however, since their ultimate goal is a vegan world.
Animal rights philosophy? From MFAs website:

My cat's morally significant interests were, sleeping, shredding, shedding, killing & eating.

The Damn Dog
One of Obama's campaign promises was to get a family dog, primarily, at his daughter's, Malia's, request.
Thanks to Bush's pup, Barney, biting a reporter, this promise has been brought to light. Thanks, Barney, for holding the press' feet to the fire to hold the president elect's feet to the fire on this burning issue.
Now they just have to pick a pup.

Because many people would refer to Mr Obama as a "half breed", he has to be careful about his choice. Because he is a liberal and has to appease crazed liberal animal rights groups, he needs to decide if he should get a traditional purebred dog or a new combo breed or a mutt. because Malia has allergies, does he get a hairless or.....
Apparently, Malia wanted a Cockapoodle, which is supposed to be a good choice for owners with allergies. Animal rights activists, who hate, despise, and loathe the notion of purebred dogs and consider anybody who breeds them to be the embodiment of Cruella De Vil, have succeeded in convincing Mr Obama to get a "rescue". No idea if this means a Cockapoodle is out. I would hate to see the kid's hopes dashed by cockamamie political correctness run amok.
I feel sorry for these guys and the hoops they are going to have to jump through and the BS that is going to be slung at them over what should be a very personal family decision.
FWIW, I like "mutts". I have allergies and like dogs - LOVE cats. You get used to 'em after awhile allergywise. In a place that will be as impeccably maintained as the president's, 16 cats and platoon of pups shouldn't be much of a problem.
I am sure Malia will grow to love whatever she ultimately gets. I would only suggest a female, so the kids can experience their pooch having a litter of puppies. Shouldn't be too hard to give away some presidential puppies.
oh wait - HSUS & PETA will need to stick their noses into it.....
