Come ON, Dayton !
This video discusses the Cleveland Arcade which is seriously awesome. I grew up haunting the much more modeest but still cool Springfield Arcade which was left to rot, mismanaged, denounced as a haven for hippies and subsequently demolished & replaced with a weird 7/8 scale hotel.
Cincinnati killed theirs way back in the 20s.
The Gem City still has it's arcade but it is falling apart & could easily disappear despite the valiant efforts of the Friends of the Dayton Arcade.
This should not happen. It doesn't have to. Maybe the Dayton Arcade could someday host a Libertarian or Green convention.

oh, Come On, Gem City…Dayton is considering aerial surveillance cameras. Unfortunatly, nothing cool & futuristic - no rat-brained drones or anything, just some guy flying around over the city. I'd think that the clowns at Wright Pat would be offering all sorts of high-tech Homeland Security surplus gear to experiment on the domestics.

On April 18, 1942, 80 men took off from an aircraft carrier on a top secret mission to bomb Japan. These men, led by Lt. Col. James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle, came to be known as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders.
Twenty-two B-25 Mitchell bombers plan to come from across the nation and land on the runway behind the National Air Force Museum on the morning of April 17. The aircraft will be on display from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
April 18 12:15 p.m., the aircraft will take-off one by one, form-up together over the Dayton area and then fly in formation over the museum at 1 p.m. -- just prior to the Doolittle Raiders Memorial Service in the museum's Memorial Park.
Hopefully they won't get carried away & bomb Dayton.
I saw & heard a group of WWII bombers quite by accident flying over Cincinnati some years ago. While a sight, it was the sound that really got me. You would NOT want to be on the receiving end of one of these runs.

5 Surviving Raiders

Illustrators. They're everywhere. You can't throw a stick without hitting one. It's like a zombie invasion.
The Springfield Center for the Arts at Wittenberg University (SCFTAAWU) is showcasing works of Vernon Grant who, besides inventing the snap, crackle, pop guys, did 26 Collier's covers.
Meanwhile, The Dayton Art Institute is showing works of Norm Rockwell who did a gazillion covers for Saturday Evening Post.

Springfield In Top 5 Again
The Springfield News Sun reports that Site Selection Magazine has ranked Springfield, OH, #5 as an area for economic development for cities between 50,000 & 200,000.
While Springfield has slipped a little. This is the third year in a row it has been in the top 5. Dayton and Cincinnati have usually ranked well in their population categories.
In other pointless list news, they also have Ohio at #10 in their top 10 states.

Animal Rights Crazies Thwarted in Tragedy Exploitation
PETA couldn't find a billboard vendor in the Dayton area to carry their planned billboard comparing eating meat to infanticide citing the death of a baby microwaved by her mom (who was later convicted of murder).
The race baiting Southern Christian Leadership Conference found it racist (no surprise). I don't think that's what the billboard vendors were opposed to.

Wright Pat Shows Off It's New Computer

Wright Patterson Air Force Base, outside historic Dayton, OH, will show off it's new Cray "Raptor" system Friday. Cray Computer is probably best known for supplying Batman with his Batcave computer system.
The liquid cooled Raptor with petascale technologies checks in with virtually 89,805 gigabytes of memory and can scale to over 1,000,000 cores using AMD multi-core processors. The lucky bastards intend to use this Linux box for weapon systems design, modeling and simulation studies.

Speaking of Toxic Reasons....
The boys were kinda influenced by The Sex Pistols, Ramones, Clash & D.O.A. I think.
The band rose from Dayton, changed personnel a zillion times & moved to San Francisco with only one original member. This MySpace page indicates they are now outta Naptown. That's certainly more appropriate as they clearly have a more midwestern, industrial, rust-belt sound.

Dayton Airport Gets Cheaper
While Cincinnatians have been using the Dayton Airport for years because of it's proximity & it's fares being incredibly lower than the Kentucky Airport, they just reduced boarding fees by a dollar.
Meanwhile, Delta has cut prices and service at the Kentucky Airport, but Dayton still beats KY's prices.
Is the relative convenience worth it? The only advantage for me is the bus fare to KY v the cab fare to Dayton.

The Electric Light Orchestra 1975 - Dayton Hara Arena
The Electric Light Orchestra was still touring the album, Eldorado. Two of my old buds spent the better part of their first decade in England and listened to the pop music their older sibs played. Some of the popular 60s british bands didn't translate well to the US. One of these bands was The Move. The first I heard of the Move was when they reformed as ELO and was pretty much under the leadership of Roy Wood. Wood was getting weirder and weirder and left the band to the much more commercially minded Jeff Lynne. He took the concept & ran with it with Bev Bevan pounding out the drums.
This band had a couple cellists, a violinist, electric bass, guitar, drums and people switching on & off keyboards. Lynne played a gold Les Paul.
This was a pretty good show although Lynne looked pretty wrecked. A friend claimed he was discreetly flipping off the audience. I missed that. He was great at classic rock-n-roll guitar & the string section (yeah I know a guitar is a string instrument) was into rocking out as much as their more traditional RnR bandmates.
It was hot.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers 1985
I don't remember much of this concert. It was just good old classic George Thorogood - Thorogood having graduated to the arena size audience and the Dayton audience is a good Rock-n-Roll audience to be sure.

Genesis 1978
Most of the original band had left and this tour was promoting the album titled, And Then There Were Three. I remember the band members switching instruments a lot at this show in Dayton's Hara Arena (home of the Dayton Gems hockey team). Genesis had been knocking around for about a decade, had some success in England and had a bit of a cult following in the U.S.- this concert was right before they got really popular & Phil Collins set out to bore and annoy the shit out of people for years to come.

Springfield Ranked #2

Cincinnati is manly. Portland is miserable. Springfield was edged out of being the best location in the nation for private commercial development in areas with populations between 50,000 and 200,000 by Sioux City, Iowa.
Springfield's #2 status was bestowed by Site Selection Magazine (who doesn't read this ?) in their annual Governor's Cup Awards issue. Cincinnati ranked fourth for metro areas over 1 million. Dayton ranked first for metros under 1 million and over 200,000.
It's pretty clear SW Ohio sucks when it comes to corporate realty.

Young's Jersey Dairy turns 140.
Young's milk is like a milkshake alone, their milkshakes ?

Young's was one of the last dairies in Ohio to sell raw milk, til our nanny state gummint shut that down.
Young's is considered one of the top tourist type places in the Dayton area. Well, it's usually associated with Yellow Springs and is closer to Springfield than Dayton, but what the hell.
In the 70s we almost always made a pit stop at Young's after movies at the Little Art Theater in Yellow Springs. Well, if the line wasn't too long.
When you go today, note the barn to the south of the store. The little white outcropping in the front used to be the store. No, there was no Putters and Udders back then.
