Horror Sells

Well, maybe not horror, but Halloween. Apparently this is considered a sexist ad, altho I'm pretty sure few women are being forced into wearing these costumes. In fact, going out in slutty costumes seems pretty popular for young women.
I recommend, horror.
and gore
and outer space aliens
and robots
and zombies

The Freaks & Geeks of Halloween

I liked this show, Freaks & Geeks. Kinda sappy but, what the heck. Anyway this episode brings up an aspect of Halloween celebration that is really interesting.
People spend the most money on Christmas but Halloween is #2. Christmas, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Memorial day - while people vary their celebrations a bit, they all tend to do the same thing. There is a single underlying theme in all those holidays. Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus (on the wrong day), 4th of July - American independence, Thanksgiving - start of the Christmas shopping season...
Halloween is all over the map.
For some it's dress up, whorish dress up, slasher movies, horror movies, food ffod & more food, pranks, whatever. A small minority of people celebrate it as Samhain or as a time when the departed ancestors are closest to the dimension of the living.
In the TV episode the family is split between the parents & their 2 kids and the evolution of their attitude and approaches to the holiday.
The cookies in the front yard with ants all over them is one of my favorite parts.

Be Afraid - Be Very Afraid

While I expected the big hysteria thing this Halloween would be Ebola tainted chocolate, it appears the Denver Heat is whipping people up over pot laced candy.
WKRC is only too happy to jump on the fear mongering because you know people will travel from Cincinnati to Colorado so they can buy cannabis products & zap 'em into candies so they can bring them back to Cincinnati & distribute them on Halloween, ultimately turning kids into commies and homos.
We need to set up road blocks now to search every car for loose candy & to find out if the drivers have been to Colorado recently. We should probably test their blood sugar, too.

Know fear at WKRC

Be a Hit at Your Hallowe'en Party!
Gross finger food is always welcome around Halloween and, if you think about it - year 'round.
This exotic delicacy is salami wrapped around cream cheese & topped off with a half olive. Pimento & Tabasco are added to the cream cheese for more zing. You can use tomato instead of olive but - why?
If you need a recipe, you're dumber than the Blogging Isn't Cool culinary staff that frequently can't even keep the dishes clean. For our next recipe? - How to Order a Pizza !.

Hallowe'en Sells
Forget about new car sales & housing starts, the new economic bellwether is Hallowe'en sales - candy, costumes, pumpkin futures…..
US News & World Report sez that to get a handle on the economy - just walk down the street & look at Hallowe'en decorations on your neighbor's porches.
170 million people are planning to celebrate Halloween this year - that's 71.5% - up from 68.6% last year. Hallowe'en spending is expected to reach almost $8B - up 17.5% from last year. Folks are going to spend $2.5B on costumes for themselves & $370M on their critters. Dunno about spending on concrete geese.

Jesusween ?

ok - first of all, iff you're going to recreate the word, use the right parts. Make it Jesuseen or something. Not sure what's wrong with Halloween anyway since, wasn't the dude hallowed?
Anyhoo, freaks out of Calgary are promoting Jesusween and will be handing out bibles on October 31. They also want kids to wear white instead of anything ghoulish or horrorific.

uhhh….

I guess the kids can go home, cop a sugar buzz & freak themselves out reading Revelations with flashlights under their chins.
I'm really all in favor of handing out alternatives to candy on Halloween. I have handed out CDs, comic books, trading cards…..
This effort to promote a religion could have some weird consequences, tho. What if people start handing out other religious texts? Will that be ok? Or will parents launch minor neighborhood crusades going on November 1st?
oh well...

10 Commandments

The 10 Commandments monument in front of the Clark County Courthouse in Springfield got smashed in 2 by a hit & run driver last Halloween. An omen? Satanists? Moses resurrected? We may never know.
The use of Christian religious monuments in our country was pretty common while the population was still pretty much 99.9% Christian. As our society has changed over the years the promotion of a particular religion has grown distasteful & these monuments are rarely put up on government property anymore. People & organizations sue governments for their removal. Clark County chose to pay twice as much to repair this monument as replace it so they might avoid more legal issues down the road.
I agree that such monuments are inappropriate nowadays but I realize that wasn't the case in yesteryear. Like when black people were considered 3/5 of a human & women couldn't vote & such......
Seems some sort of grandfathering should be in place for this stuff but what Clark County is dealing with is something I admit I had not considered. I would say a replacement should have been ok. Then, again, if the monument is to mean anything, it should have been fixed. Frankly, I think a potpourri of ancient law givers, like on the Supreme Court building would be cooler & more appropriate.

Natural/Homemade Treats ?

When I was a kid, Trick or Treating resulted in a lot of candy but also a lot of brownies, cookies, popcorn balls, candy apples & other homemade stuff. There was an apartment building full of old people up the street & they would shuffle out of their apartments & hand out pie & apple juice to the kids & coffee for the parents. Of course, coming outside also headed of a bunch of dirty & obnoxious kids from coming into the building.
Over the years, however, homemade goodies have been frowned on as reports of poisoned and drugged foods have spread through the media like wildfire. Hospitals routinely offer X-Ray facilities for checking candies for needles & razor blades and such.
Because the media likes sex & terror so much, mixing them together with pedophilia hysteria is a natural. Some towns actually round up all the convicted pedophiles and lock 'em up for the evening on October 31. This, of course, keeps the police from watching the streets as little kids in vision impairing masks are out running around in the streets in a sugarized frenzy. The thing is, there has been less than a handful of Halloween related cases of pedophilic rapes reported.
The fact is, in about 60 years there have been less than 100 cases of Halloween treat tampering nationwide and almost 90% of those cases have found the tampering was done by a family member.
With this limited batch of numbers, you are statistically safer getting your Halloween treats from the creepy old guy down the street who likes to show kids his train set than from your dad. Of course, if your dad happens to be the creepy old guy with the train set.....
I don't like giving out candy bars on Halloween. Dunno why. It seems cheesy & over commercialized. I have given out comic books, trading cards & toys in the past. I was thinking of going retro this year & handing out apples. I don't want parents to just automatically throw the things out when the kid brings his swag home, tho. I mean, once I give it away, I don't really care, but.....
So I am asking all you parental types out there (because I know the thousands of people who read this waste of magnetism are wonderful parents), is it ok to hand out fruit & handmade treats on Halloween ? Or are we reduced to Walmart style halloweens due to MSM hysteria nowadays ?
For your convenience, I have added a poll in the top right of the page.
DISCLAIMER, I am not a pedophile & I do not have a train set but I am without a doubt, a creepy old guy down the street. Or, as one kid yelled at me one year, "FUCK YOU MAN ! YOU'RE WEIRD !"

The Jack Chop

Halloween is just around the corner & it's time to start thinking about decorations including that Jack-o-Lantern. It's not time to buy a pumpkin yet, however. If you do, it will be a mushy stinky mess by Halloween (unless your neighbor's kids put it out of it's misery).
Anyway, while scouting around for Jack-o-Lantern ideas, I found the "Jack Chop". Looks like a nifty, time saving tool & the layaway plan just makes it too good a deal to pass up !

Champion City Halloweenies - Chill !

A Springfield woman who has celebrated Halloween with her displays on her house has decided to expand into the vacant lot next door, which she does not own but maintains, due to an absentee owner who, apparently, ignores it. -whew-
So what does she get for her labors ? City zoning code enforcement doesn't like the temporary fence or the temporary "haunted house" the woman has constructed. The city can send out workers to demolish the offending constructs made to bring joy and happiness to the neighborhood kids but they would have to bill the owner for the work & he's off in Florida not giving a rat's rear. whatadilemma.....
Makes me think of the words from Grace Slick's Lawman:
well I've heard your line & you've heard mine
& I'm just too tired to take a side
bring your business around here in the morning
Don't you want to be easy
look there
let some of the things you see go on by
or you can burn them into your brain
go on home
Don't you see the children, they're just like you
they want everything to be fine but they let it slide
and the laughing lets you know that smiling breaks the rules

Halloween Gone Wrong

I received this in a recent newsletter:
Mother Holle’s Halloween Adventures
$40 per day/per child
Halloween can be a very confusing and even scary time for the young child who is completely bombarded by Halloween hype.
Miss Chris and Miss Vicki are offering a lovely alternative experience to this based on the story of ‘Mother Holle’, a classic Grimm’s Fairy tale. Children 4-6 year old will travel on a magical journey that frees the imagination and gives a sense of accomplishment for their good work at the farm during this time of harvest. The children will engage in an artistic project, gather apples from the orchard, collect firewood to feed the dragon (oven), and bake a feast of apple dumplings and pumpkin bread to share as a reward for their service and hard work.

OK, here's the story of Mother Holle.
The story cites a great work ethic, even in slavery is rewarded with material wealth.
It also equates physical beauty with good values and ugliness with poor values.
First of all, that's weird and second of all, it has nothing to do with Halloween.
Since the Holle sisters are charging parents to submit their kids to slave labor, I guess it all kinda makes sense. Dunno what it has to do with Halloween, tho. Seems like more of a neocon indoctrination drill.
Folks, there's a reason for the season. Take your kids to the cemetery and celebrate your ancestors. Celebrate the harvest and eternal life.
Halloween isn't about Mother Holle - it's about the Queen of Disks.

Around my house, it's Halloween pretty much 365 days a year, 24 hrs a day. My last post should be of some testament to that.
Anyway, even tho it's more than 2 months out, Clark County's dancing sheriff has decreed Beggar's Night to be Oct. 30 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Glad to see somebody has their priorities in order.
From the Noose Son:
"Springfield, Ohio — Beggar's night in Clark County will be Thursday, Oct. 30, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sheriff Gene Kelly has announced.
The date and time is expected to be observed county-wide, said Kelly.
